The Swedish Jockey Club is one of few in Europe that has a category for Purebred Arabians at their Awards Gala Dinner. This year the winner was so obvious that there was only one horse nominated - Gharraa!
Gharraa is bred in Iraq by her owner Dr Mohammed Al Nujaifi, who has horses in training in a number of countries. The last few years he has had a successful string in training with Pia Höiom Sweden with Al Dahis winning the "Arabian of the Year" Award for the 2010 season.
4 year old filly Gharraa has however proved to be something special. Winning the Scandinavian Arab Derby, The Stockholm Arabian Cup (G3 PA) and finishing 3rd in G1 races on both Ascot and Longchamp she earned about € 50,000 - the highest amount ever earned in one season by a Swedish trained arabian. With about €35,000 of that amount earned in UK and France Pia Höiom also became the Swedish based trainer that earned the most money outside Scandinavia. Including those racing Thouroughbreds abroad that is!
Gharraa's €50,000 also puts her in 7th place of ALL fillies trained in the country in terms of money earned.
The prize was presented by Hh Sheika Najla Al Qassimi, ambassador for the UAE in Sweden, at The Swedish Jockey Clubs big Horseracing Gala dinner at Grand Hotels winter garden in Stockholm last saturday. The trophy was received by Ms Höiom on behalf of Dr Al Nujafi.
