Sam Vasquez is the grinning owner of the winning horse in the $20,000 Texas Arabian Derby. His bay colt, Mags Mad Max, narrowly prevailed in the 1 1/16 mile race after dueling gamely with Insync coming down the stretch. These two bested the rest of the 6 horse field of Arabian 4-year-old colts, blasting away from them by 24 1/2 lengths. Gengis Kong, SE Perfecto, MW Mister Z and Nazhar De Blaziet also ran. Mags Mad Max is sired by Makzan, a well traveled stallion born in France, exported to Qatar, then to the United Kingdom and to Germany. This winning sire of 58 progeny is owned by HH Sheikh Abdulla Bin Khalifa Al Thani. The dam of Mags Mad Max is Darling Doraa, a daughter of Monarch who raced only twice. She won both her races, one of them the Cre Run Oaks, and was exported to the United Arab Emirates. This Derby win for Mags Mad Max makes his 2nd stakes win in his collection that includes 5 other wins and 2 stakes placings. The Texas Arabian Oaks for Fillies & Mares was cancelled for 2005. Racing for Arabians continues at Retama through October 15.
